"War Injuries, Triage and Iraq’s Emerging Therapeutic Geographies"

A Lecture by Dr. Omar Dewachi

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 | 12:00- 1:00 pm | Van Dyck Auditorium

The World Health Organization has estimates that 12% of Iraqis (around 2.5 million) live currently with disability due to 3 decades of war. Still the notion of war-injuries is somewhat vague and controversial given the history of warfare and the politicization of conflict- related injuries in Iraq. In this presentation, as part of ongoing anthropological research on Iraqis seeking healthcare in the region, Dr. Dewachi will explore the political and cultural logics of triage of war injuries in Iraq vis-à-vis the current policies and experiences of Iraqis seeking healthcare outside Iraq.

Dr. Omar Dewachi
is an Assistant Professor of Medical Anthropology and Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut.
